about our cocoon lamps
mid-century classics!
Our cocoon lamps are true mid-century classics, originally designed by the legendary Fritz Wauer and produced over a period of 40 years by his lighting company, Goldkant.
Fritz Wauer pioneered the groundbreaking cocoon technique in 1952 after reading a newspaper article about how the U.S. military used a liquid polymer thread to preserve World War II equipment being shipped across the Atlantic.
As a lampshade manufacturer, Fritz had already patented a technology for producing tension-free metal wire frames. He immediately saw an opportunity to combine the two technologies to create new and innovative lamp designs.
Over his career, Fritz Wauer designed more than 400 cocoon lamps, and original vintage pieces often sell for several thousand euros at auction.
